Born out of the former Silom restaurant institution of Sorrento, Zalute has moved down the road and extended the menu borders beyond Italy into Spain, Greece and the Mediterranean. Exposed brick walls, polished concrete and sage green hues, the interior is fresh and contemporary and the fairly light clad terrace is like the embrace of a Spanish villa. The wooden beams, arches and waterfall come from an owner who lives and breathes high-quality. The décor might suggest a beautiful space in Europe but the food is out of this world.
Foie gras with pomegranate and rocket salad is a special appetizer at 750 thb and divine. The pomegranate is imported and only the best of the best ingredients are ever used in every dish. Belgian endives and pan seared Hokkaido scallops with a delicate orange dressing at 390 thb is the freshest, crunchiest, most heavenly salad. The scallops are cooked to perfection with a sprinkle of walnuts. The Italian Soave Sangiouese wine at 1400 thb a bottle is perfect.
The pastitsion of baked macaroni with beef and cinnamon is not on any other menu in Bangkok. Whether it is magic potions, some culinary spell or just damn fine cooking, this unique Greek dish weaves a spell which has you crying out for more. The pasta has to be the best there is. At 280 thb the price is magical as well. One bite of the Greek salad of radicchio, cucumber, red onion, tomatoes, peppers, kalamata olives and feta cheese at 250 thb, and you are suddenly in the best restaurant in the Mediterranean.
The paella arrives in an authentic pan and a wonderful sized main at 550 thb. Even the most Spanish Spaniard would approve. It is succulent, aromatic and velvety with the best seafood there is – octopus, scallop, mussels and king prawn. The Chateaubriand at 1800 thb for two people is astonishing value with the best beef from New Zealand. Cooked on a trolley right by the table with the scent of the Madeira wine sauce and the licking flames, nothing comes close to such culinary perfection. It is decadent, delicious and makes you deliriously happy.
The Belero 2005 Toscana wine complements the food well and is dry and full-bodied. The pizza Zalute at 350 thb is frighteningly good. Two rounds of crisp, very thin dough with mascarpone cream in the middle with chives, onions and garlic. This has to be tried to be believed – how can anything taste this ridiculously moreish?
The banana flambé with gran marnier, lime juice, raisins, pistachio and caramel sauce is made at the table too and by now you will be eternally grateful that Zalute exists as one of the best restaurants you will have ever been to, ever.
