The Outer Room Cafe & Bar

Owning your own restaurant is a dream harbored by many of us. For most it remains only a dream, but for Yuji Enami it has become a reality. And like many small, privately owned dining spots, The Outer Room Cafe & Bar is a mirror of Yuji's personality, experiences and what he likes in food and drink.

Yuji, like a growing number of people on our planet, has a multi-ethnic, multicultural background and has lived and worked in different parts of the world. He, of course, enjoys Japanese food, but he also has a passion for the flavors of Tex/Mex creations. This is reflected in the numerous Tex/Mex dishes – often with a Japanese twist – that appear on his menu.

His 180 baht signature Outer roll, for example, is made by wrapping chicken & avocado in a flour tortilla and the cutting and serving is much like a sushi roll. On top of this, a bit of gingko leaf is included, giving it a Japanese tang and appearance. Among Yuji's salads, you've got to love his Avocado salad with fresh avocado, prawns and vegetables. This delicious 220 baht creation is a meal in itself and comes with an ample supply of avocado.

The pasta dishes are the favorites of his customers, particularly the 320 baht Spaghetti mentaiko, a dish of spaghetti that is doused in a piquant sauce featuring marinated fish eggs, a classic East meets West creation that exhibits great tastes from both sides of the world. Another pasta that is eminently enjoyable is the 270 baht Salmon cream pasta, a creation that confirms salmon and cream were made for each other. There are, of course, numerous other items on The Outer Room's surprising large menu. These include delicious Chicken fajita, Nachos, Caesar salad, Buffalo chicken wings and numerous other Tex/Mex items.

Eating is only half the story at The Outer Room; many of the customers come here primarily for something to drink and this charming little spot doesn't let them down. To start with, Yuji has one of the best 'happy hours' in town. From 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm each evening, all drinks (except water!) are half price. This means you can enjoy, for example, a massive Classic Martini for only 120 baht, a Mojito (there are several varieties) for 90 baht, a fabulous Mango lassi for 100 baht or a simple soft drink for 30 baht. And if you are a connoisseur of Japanese beer, you can quaff an Ebisu black for only 120 baht.

There are numerous other items on his massive drinks menu, including reasonably priced spirits by the bottle, including Jim Beam at 1700 baht and Beefeater at 1500 baht. It you don't finish the bottle, you can put your name on it and use it the next time you are at the place. Yuji also has a large selection of sake and shochu, both by the bottle and glass. For those who bring their own drinks, there is a corkage charge of 500 baht.

The Outer Room is located in a converted townhouse. On the ground floor there are dining tables both inside and outside on a small terrace. There is also a small bar with ten stools or so for those who arrive solo. Upstairs there are a variety of private rooms for those who enjoy karaoke or who want to eat and drink in private. One of them even has a small stage with state of the art electronics equipment.

The Outer Room Cafe & Bar is open daily from 5.30 pm to 2:00 am. It is a unique and friendly place that is ideal for having a good time while chatting with friends and enjoying a drink and something to eat.
