Royal Orchid Sheraton offers a free shuttle from the banks of the Chao Phraya River via the pier located under the Taksin Bridge. The free shuttle boat leaves at ten minutes after each hour and forty minutes after the hour and is a romantic way to begin your journey. It is a richly appointed wooden boat, with comfortable leather seating, fresh flowers, and cold towel & water service aboard.

Once you arrive at the hotel and restaurant, you are greeted by the friendly staff and an immaculate dining room that instantly makes you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. It’s all polished wood, Thai silk and ornate wood carvings as well as traditional seating where you are asked to take your shoes off before being seated.

The menu is 100% Royal Thai cuisine and Chef Charoensri Vatanyut has been employed at the restaurant for more than 25 years. She has dedicated herself to the art of preparing traditional Thai cuisine of the highest quality. Every dish is expertly balanced while arousing all the senses. Recommended starters include the Mieng Kim which consists of dried shrimp, fried coconut, peanuts, finely chopped chilies, shallots, lime, and sweet tamarind sauce which is served with ‘Cha Plu” which is a bitter Thai leaf. This is finger food at its best as you take the varied ingredients, wrap them in a leaf, and create the perfect bite which is a flavor sensation that is sweet, sour, and spicy all at once.

Yum Nua Yang is the tangy Thai beef salad made from strip loin imported from New Zealand. The beef is flavorful and tender and just about melts in your mouth. The portion is large enough to share between several people, which is the traditional way of enjoying Thai cuisine.

The standout dish is the Roasted Duck in Red Curry. The duck aroma permeates the rich and complex curry, which is spicy and full of unexpected surprises like lychee fruit. It is a fragrant dish with bold flavors that are both mysterious and memorable.

Other recommended dishes include the Stir Fried Prawns with Black Pepper and Stir fried Soft Shell Crab with Yellow Curry. The prawn dish is subtle and restrained with generous portions of succulent shrimp, while the crab dish is a mild and delicate curry featuring light and crispy fried crab that is not too oily or heavy. Don’t forget to order dessert, as they have a delectable homemade coconut ice cream and an interesting array of crème brûlée made from seasonal fruits such as lychee, mango and mangosteen.

As you savor each exotic entrée, you can enjoy the gentle sounds of live classical Thai music and view traditional Thai dancing. The dancing is available from 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm from Tuesday – Thursday and consists of three 10-15 minute sets complete with costume changes and a photo opportunity with the dancers at the end of the show. Afterwards, feel free to move to the outside seating area to enjoy cocktails and luxuriate in the calming effects of the sounds from the waters of the Chao Phraya River. It’s the ultimate in Thai dining and entertainment and an evening at Thara Thong leaves you feeling as if you are an honored guest at an exclusive event. Thara Thong is the perfect place to experience the best of Thai hospitably, and elevate an everyday dining experience into a special occasion. While reservations are not required, they are highly recommended.
