Tapas Y Vino: Grand Millennium Sukhumvit

Enter Tapas Y Vino and the colours and decor immediately remind you of Spain. The walls are a vibrant red, the wood floor is bordered with a strip of Spanish tile, a Spanish Ibérico ham awaits slicing on the counter and a parade of tapas stream from behind the counter. But all is not Spanish at Tapas Y Vino. The wine selection has new and old world offerings from all corners of the globe. The tapas are eclectic, but center on Spanish classics and some unique creations by Chef Victor Burgos.

Located on the 2nd floor of the Grand Millennium Sukhumvit, this wine bar cum restaurant is compact, but a bit more elegant than most of the city’s wine bar outlets. Seating is at the bar overlooking the cooking action or at tables that stretch along the wall with bottles of wine in racks above. There is a private room at the end of the room for private parties and small functions.

Tapas Y Vino is open for lunch on Mon-Fri from 12.00-14.00 and is increasingly popular with shoppers and the business community. The attractively priced 3-course 450 baht net 'Business Set Lunch' includes starters like Catalonian soup with seafood and saffron potato or a Salad of greens with Serrano ham and melon sherry honey dressing. Examples of main courses include Orange and mint baked Salmon with sauteed new potato and Grilled chicken breast with zucchini and black olive mashed potato. Desserts typically encompass dishes like Crème Catalane and Spanish rice pudding with cinnamon. If this isn't enough, there is also a Tapas & Paella buffet lunch at 450 baht net with an 'all you can eat' supply of Tapas and Paella.

Tapas Y Vino has the largest selection of wines by the glass that we have seen in Bangkok, there are numerous wines available by the glass starting at 200 baht and over 200 different selections in bottles. We enjoyed a modest, but enjoyable 2010 Cape Zebra, Pinotage, South Africa before moving on to wine by the bottle. There were several more attractive wines at under 300 baht a glass.

On the evening of our visit we started with Marinated salmon and guacamole air (180 baht), a dish that reminded how well avocado goes with salmon. We then moved to Pancetta wrapped goat cheese with mango chutney (180 baht) and, the house specialty, a plate of Spanish cold cuts accompanied with Manchego cheese at 420 baht. We then, gluttons that we are, had a main course: a smashing 320 baht Rack of lamb with rosemary breadcrumbs and sauteed artichokes. For dessert we had a delicious Chocolate sponge with orange marmalade, a dish that demonstrated the affinity of chocolate and orange.

Our favourite accompanying red wine was a modestly priced Santa Cristina, Antinori 2006 from Tuscany at 1,990 baht, a Sangiovese from one of Italy's leading winemakers that is always a delight to drink. For a white, we moved upmarket a bit and enjoyed an 'in your face' sprightly and fruity 2009 Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc from the Marlborough region of New Zealand at 3050 baht a bottle.

Tapas Y Vino is known for the numerous and imaginative promotions created by Chef Victor Burgos. In the evening he has enlarged the 'all you can eat' Tapas & Paella buffet and included the option of a free flow of house wines at only 950 baht net (800 baht without wine). The restaurant/wine bar also regularly features one-off promotions and multi-course wine dinners with exclusive wines and menus created by celebrated chefs.

Open at Lunch: Monday-Saturday, 12.00 - 14.30 hrs. and daily for Dinner: Monday-Sunday, 18.00 - 22.30 hrs. Tapas Y Vino should be on any wine lovers list of favorite places for wine, tapas and complete meals.
