Tasty Tapas Treats
Spanish on 4 is the sister restaurant of the popular Sukhumvit favourite, the Tapas Bar and is a welcome addition to the Silom party district. For all Europeans, the small sharing dishes of tapas are not just how you eat food but how you enjoy life.

Spanish on 4 is smart-casual and has the feeling, not necessarily in a bad way, of a successful chain restaurant. With a couple of Spanish chefs overseeing the kitchen, Spanish on 4 does attempt to be authentic, importing ingredients rather than offering morphed-versions of classic tapas favorites. Given the sheer volume of dishes it is inevitable that some make you want to sing Viva L’Espagna more than others.
A jug of Sangria sets the tone for a pre or post siesta session. From 100 thb for a glass up to 600 thb for a litre, the Sangria is good value and the Monday night two for one offer is living la vida loca. Tapas is as good looking as a bevy of Spanish beauties. As plate upon plate of tempting tapas arrives the table is transformed into a colorful Gaudi-esque mosaic of Mediterranean morsels. It is all you can do to stop yourself from reaching for your camera for photographic evidence of this table-top work of art.
All the tapas dishes range from around 100 thb upwards which means that six or seven dishes is going to cost around 1000 thb between two. The Serrano ham is big enough for three. The manchego cheese salad is great but difficult to share between two because it is divided into three different types of manchego cheese, each slice topped on a chunk of baguette, with a salad at the side.
Boquerones, or white anchovy fillets in vinegar, are perfect on bread and the highlight of any tapas menu. It is a sign of quality that Spanish on 4 has this on the menu. The grilled goats cheese with red pepper salad, on toasted bread is melt-in the mouth. It is definitely one of the best tapas dishes on the menu. The tortilla, potato and onion omelette, has a tasty blandness which makes this dish delicious, although it is perhaps a little soft in the middle.
Fried potatoes with a spicy tomato sauce are usually a fiery success but the patatas bravas were a little lacking in passion. The baby, griddled green asparagus added color and are in line with the boutique feel of the banquet. The chicken and pepper kebab with garlic and balsamic sauce was as tender as a Spanish night. The grilled baby squid were fresh, authentic and a highlight of the menu. The strips rather than rings of the calamares are not as impressive as the wonderful texture of lightly battered, authentic squid rings.
With the much desired Iberian ham on the menu, it is obvious that Spanish on 4 is not a gimmicky restaurant and has at least stepped foot in Spain rather than simply read a guide book on its cuisine.
