New Zealand’s Finest Fish at Succulent Snapper

Forget greasy chip shops selling battered cod or exorbitantly priced seafood extravaganzas with fancy fish suppers. What Bangkok’s fish and chip fans have been waiting for, tomato sauce at the ready, is a good priced, fish restaurant that serves succulent, sensational seafood in splendid surroundings.

Snapper NZ offers soul food – no pun intended - that only comes with a perfectly light and crispy batter, as well as the fresh, zesty and modern flavors of the Pacific which in one bite takes you to another continent where your taste senses sail off into the sunset of seafood satisfaction.

All the fish at Snapper NZ, and even the chips, are imported from New Zealand, and the menu, taste and quality are so fine that you will be singing about your supper to other fish-loving friends. The shop-house style restaurant has big long, beautiful wooden tables, a fresh, coastal décor with touches of artistic style, with seating outside too.

Imagine the coolest seafood café, right by the beach, where you can get amazing food, in relaxed, hip surroundings, without having to fish too far into your funds, and then transport this to a dark, popular city sub-soi. It doesn’t get much better than this in all your fishy fantasies.

The tarakihi fried fish is robust and moist and perfectly cooked. For 180 thb, and 75 thb for a half scoop of chips, this is enough to share with a few extra marine morsels as well. The southern king fish, from more remote waters, has a sweeter and milder taste, with a delicate texture that is all the softer against the outer crunch. Served in big bowls with paper underneath keeps the organic, fish and chip café style, which is a nice touch.

The New Zealand whole flounder for 350 thb has a crispy skin from being pan-fried in herb butter, and is served with sunflower seed toast. One mouthful of this wonderfully earthy, comfort food, with the melt in the mouth meat spread on the bread, is a fish dish fairytale and deserves a medal.

Starters and tasting plates for sharing give the menu a real mix and match feel which is perfect for this style of eating. The scallops in white wine, New Zealand butter and chives, for 280 thb, are delicately decadent; the deep fried green lip mussels, for 30 thb each, add a seafood snack-shack vibe to this relaxed, smart casual fare.

The marinated mussels for 165 thb let you taste the top quality of the seafood at Snapper; and the tiger prawns sautéed with onion, garlic, capsicum, as well as lime and jalapenos, served with toasted ciabatta, will have even the most refined diner mopping up the juices, rolling up their sleeves and tucking in, before running out into the night to tell everyone about this fantastic place they have just discovered.

One visit to Snapper and you will be doing the Haka to challenge anyone to find better fish and chips in Bangkok. A firm, fantastic, fishy favorite.
