Bavaria’s Sausage Supper
Whilst it is great to dress yourself up to the nines once in a while for a night of sophisticated haute-cuisine there is nothing quite like a good old-fashioned, slap-up meal, in a bierkeller, Bavarian style restaurant where the atmosphere is casual but celebratory and the food has a gusto that only the Germans can seem to really achieve with their almighty meals.

A night of real beer and hearty fare is what the Old German Beerhouse is famed for. And it is the country-style simplicity of knowing what people like to eat and how they like to eat it which makes this such an inviting choice. The Beerhouse is akin to a comfy pair of lederhosen, which you inevitable find yourself wanting to step into more often than any glamorous outfit.
The restaurant is a large expanse of open space with a big bar at the front, which is open to the busy, exciting and people-watching attractions of Sukhumvit Soi 11. There is a big table to the side for the regulars, which is typically Bavarian, and towards the back, men playing cards and drinking dark brews adds to the feeling of homely neighbourhood relaxation.
The Old German Beerhouse manages to be both a restaurant and a bar, which is a rare feat in Bangkok. Not only that but it also manages to attract what so few restaurants do, a perfect mix of Bangkok old-timer expats, new and excited residents, tourists and Asian businessmen. It’s like the whole of Bangkok all happily hanging out together, eating sausages and drinking beer in the front room of some big Bavarian country house.
With main meals around the few hundred mark the prices are comfortable too, giving you the impression that you are paying enough to expect quality but not enough that you can’t come back the next night or the night after that. The mixed sausage platter is a meat feast with Nuremberg, pork and veal sausages as well as frankfurters filling a large plate. Although, often steamed in tradition, the sausages are grilled and the Old German Beerhouse offers a good selection of grilled food.
In fact the menu is extensive, opening its arms to the wider culinary community of customers. But with homemade sauerkraut and mashed potatoes, along with thick onion gravy, the restaurant does not water down its tradition of cooking up great German dishes. From time to time a chef comes through the restaurant carrying a long spit with aromatic smelling grilled pork knuckle. The rotisserie is outside the restaurant, actually nestled into the wall on the street. This explains why when the pork arrives it has a wonderful grilled outside and is melt-in-the-mouth inside.
The mash has potato pieces, which are not quite, smoothed out which adds to the home-style cooking and comfort food value, and the sauerkraut has just the right amount of sourness and crunch. For a sausage, a beer and relaxed but lively dining the Old German Beerhouse is your best foodie friend.
