My Porch - Yushoku, Japanese Style Home Cooking

Happy waiters merrily escort sated diners through the rain under an umbrella to waiting cars, over the small deck of this Sukhumvit bistro style restaurant and you instinctively know that on a wet, mid-week night in Bangkok you have definitely come to the right place.

My Porch perks up life for the after-work hungry hordes with Italian food served Japanese style. This townhouse hideaway is instantly pleasing to the eye. The wooden deck outside, with trees sprouting through, the cosy but relaxed vibe, the leather chairs and compact eating areas all serve up a big helping of welcome hospitality. My Porch is a restaurant that is at ease with the relaxed atmosphere it creates without losing the sense that eating out is different than a home cooked meal.

Neither Japanese nor Italian, the décor is a pleasing understated European and Asian mix that subdues anyone frazzled from city life. The food has a fine dining feel without being too over the top. The homemade chicken liver pate is smooth, delicate and presented on a long, Japanese style dish with slivers of melba toast for a reasonable 150 thb. The mussels with white wine are huge and wonderfully garlicky and are a reminder of the Italian overtones at My Porch.

The pepperonchino pasta comes at either 260 or 340 thb for different sized appetites and is a variation on the classic Italian theme. The spaghetti with olive oil, garlic, red pepper, bacon and mushrooms is a light pasta that does not overpower.

The scallop (Hotake) steak is seared to perfection, straight from the Japanese sea near Hokkaido, where the mange tout and stir fried mushroom with sour soy sauce offer flavour and balance. At 580 thb it is not the cheapest choice on the menu but the prices at My Porch include good set menus and a good evening set option for groups with an appetizer, salad, pasta, main course and dessert from upwards of 600 thb depending on the thirst for the finer foods on the menu.

The downstairs bustle of a few tables leads up wooden stairs to a few leather chairs and soft banquette seating with a pretty and mellow outdoor decked area that can be seen through the glass divide between the two. Another floor up gives yet another cosy sectioned-off level. Whilst the menu offers Japanese inspired Italian cuisine such as pasta with light cream sauce and sea urchin, My Porch is not surprisingly a popular Italian eatery that appeals to the sense and sensibilities of the local Japanese community.

For Westerners and Italian food aficionados, wanting the over stuffed, garlic induced indulgence of delicious dolce vita, My Porch does not quite mix the same sauce with the same style of macaroni as the classic Italian cookbooks but for the ambience and after-work fine Italian food or lunchtime lounge it has enough garlic to satisfy and less dough to keep your waistline in check too. My Porch is suited to the Asian palette but does strive to welcome all.
