A Mexican Fiesta In Bangkok

Everybody loves a bowl of tortilla chips with a few dips and an iced beer. There’s something about a great Mexican restaurant that makes you want to get into a festival frame of mind, not take life too seriously and enjoy the company of friends and loved ones. But with so many themed restaurants feeling as hollow as a bashed in piñata, getting into the tequila spirit is not always so easy.

Bangkok’s latest Mexican wave comes from the impressive Los Cabos, a huge ark of a building offering California Bahia food that is authentic and full of beans. Run by a native southern Californian, who knows tomtillos from tomatoes the food is home style delicious.

The friendly bar serves up tortilla chips in a big marble style pestle dish with delicious homemade guacamole. The row of dips includes a mild and crunchy salsa, a green chilli and jalapeno fresca that adds a little heat, and a wonderfully smoky, roasted tomato salsa with garlic and imported chipotle. A bottle of arbol chilli sauce adds a few extra drops of oomph and for 175 thb this is a healthy bar snack price.

With a decent margarita at 130 thb and the bar area buzzing with an early evening vibe, it is difficult not to relax and get your Mexican mojo on. Spicy beef nachos at 175 thb come piled high with tender shredded beef, which cannot be compared with minced beef topping, although the California style streaks of sour cream don’t quite make up for a big pot of cream to dunk a chip or two into.

The worst idea of Mexican food is that it is dollops of dips and meat which all seem to combine into a messy and gooey meal, so the grilled rock lobsters with a pot of mojo brown butter are sublime, fresher than fresh and a welcome change from carbo chips. At 550 thb for a kilo, there are also half kilo portions available which are plenty for two people with some other dishes.

Most of the main are around a few hundred baht with some specials reaching to around 500 thb. For dessert, the frozen white chocolate flan with white chocolate shavings and pumpkin seed brittle is big enough to share, and good value at 150 thb but somehow might have worked better if it had been thawed to match the warm atmosphere.

Los Cabos is a big open building with an outside decked bar area and a horseshoe bar which is convivial and perfect for bar snacks. The main part of the restaurant is all lime green colored wood with a big open dining area and space for a live band. The decor is fresh, smart and fun without being cliched. Upstairs the restaurant opens out to a roof area with tables and a big space for parties.

Los Cabos, is ideal for fun celebrations, especially as the menu and the ambience appeals to all ages, tastes and nationalities in friendly Mexican style.
